Inside Eliza’s Head

Here’s a glimpse inside the way Eliza’s mind works: We were walking back to the car today from a quick visit to the pool and some swimming. She was carrying her bucket, which is covered in pictures of Disney princesses. Suddenly, she stops in the parking lot, and stares at the shadows of the two of us on the asphalt.

“What’s up, Eliza?”

“Daddy…there are no princesses in the shadow. But there are princesses on the bucket!”

“Yep, that’s pretty weird, Eliza. That’s just how shadows work.”

“Hmmm. Okay.”

Seemed safer than trying to explain the properties of light to her.

Daddy Play

I must admit, I didn’t necessarily want to fall into the “daddy” stereotypes, but one where I fall firmly is in the sort of play that Eliza and I enjoy. Lots more physical, more rolling around, flipping, hanging upside down than Bets would ever try.

The good news for me is, of course, she loves it. And is very clear when she’s reached her limit of excitement, and wants to just lay down for a minute.

I also just had my 4 month checkup, and I’m 14 pounds, 5 ounces and 25 inches tall! 75% for both, so I’m nice and proportionate.

Wish we were in Japan

…so that I could order a few of these.

Dakigokochi
Dakigokochi

To celebrate the birth of a baby in a way that makes it feel like the kid’s right there in your arms, a rice shop in the southwestern Japanese city of Kita-Kyushu will send out a customized dakigokochi, a roughly baby-shaped bag of high-grade rice to everyone on your birth announcement list. The bag will be printed with the kid’s picture, stats, and a greeting–and it will weigh the same as the kid did at birth.

One of the million reasons that I love Japanese culture. Wish I had a rice bag o’ Eliza!

Eliza has a library!

Eliza now officially has a library! Thanks to the generosity of my good friend Tim, Eliza is now a proud Lifetime member of LibraryThing! So if anyone out there has thoughts of getting her books in the future, now we have a way to double check to see if she owns it…and boy, is she going to own some books.

It’s about 7:30pm

We’ve been in the hospital just about 10 hours now, and Betsy is working hard. Epidural is in, so the pain is less, but the work is still hard.

My mom and sister just came in, so there’s a bit more company. Still feels like lonely business.

Update #1

Betsy is doing well. Called my mom to tell her that B’s water broke, and she said that she was on her way as soon as the cornbread came out of the oven. My mom cooks when she’s nervous.

In Denver

You know that it’s bad when Eliza isn’t even here yet, and I’m  in Denver, and I miss her.

*sigh*

Miss Bets as well. 🙁
