New House

We are finally in the new house, and can (mostly) relax a bit. The move was difficult, not because of distance, but because we are both so busy and the details so hard to keep up with. For the first month of trying to buy the house, it was financial stuff….getting stuff together for the mortgage officer, finding the right loan combination, making sure our credit scores were good, checking all the numbers again and again and again. Then came the approval, and we moved into prep mode: changing addresses, updating online accounts (do you have any idea how many online accounts I updated? Amazon, Netflix, online banking, Paypal, Ebay…and a ton I don’t remember yet, probably), changing over utilities (gas, water, electricity, cable, phone) making sure that all of them are done on time, house appraisal, insurance coverage…so much stuff!

That’s not counting the actual packing.

Then we decided that we were going to paint two rooms in the house before we moved things into it. Which gave us more or less 48 hours or so to get in, prep, paint, and let it dry before we started hauling things in. Then this past weekend came the moving…boxes and boxes and boxes of things, furniture, all while trying not to destroy the new paint jobs in the two rooms. And while trying to keep the pets happy.

Lets just say that the last few months have been….stressful.

But now it’s mostly over, and we’re in the new house, and it’s wonderful. The house itself is amazing. I’m just looking forward to the day when we can both come home, sit on the couch, and relax for a bit.

Weekend

Had a phenomenal weekend, working a lot but enjoying some of the great weather. Got to go on a good hike on Sunday with Indy and Bets along Shakerag Hollow…the wildflowers are unbelievable. There must be a dozen species blooming along the trail, and there are entire hillsides of trilliums. Pictures will follow soon.

This week = Stress and things of which we may not speak. We’ll see how it goes.

Best Joke Ever

So we’re laying around last night, trying to decide what to have for dinner. I’m leaning towards the Quidnunc Cafe, which serves excellent sandwiches and calzones here on the mountain. Here’s a transcript of the exchange between Betsy and I:

Me: “Come on…you know you want a yummy calzone. You can put anything you want in it, and they bake it all golden brown…”

Betsy: “Like Paris Hilton?”

Third day of work

Well, this is the third day of my filling in temporarily for someone who’s out in the Computing and Network Services department here on campus. Getting to meet TONS of faculty and staff, which is good. Also good is being on campus, and getting to have lunch with Bets everyday. đŸ™‚

With a little help from your friends…

With a little assistance from Justin, I’ve put together a search plugin for Mozilla Firefox for the Library Catalog for Sewanee: The University of the South. I’ll be interested to see how widespread it gets, since I’m still under the impression that technology isn’t always embraced readily on campus.

Check it out if you are interested. Just unzip into your Firefox/search plugins directory, and it should work fine.

I have no words

Weeks ago Betsy and I were wandering around an odd store in Winchester, TN, called Hammer’s. It’s a department store from the 1940’s or so, and has never been renovated or updated at all. The current contents of the store change from time to time, and all of it is cheap, and weird.

Case in point, this candle:

Smell My Nuts candle

Now….this is NOT a photoshop job. This candle was sitting happily alongside other candles, with scents like “Apricot Jam” and “Apple Cobbler.” If you can’t read it, here’s an enlargement of the photo, and here’s one of just the label.

The mind boggles and the fact that someone, somewhere, thought this was a good name for a scent. I nearly had to be picked up off the floor when I saw this, and I’m keeping it here on my desk to remind me that somewhere out in the world, the person who named this has a job, and I, as yet, do not.

Edit: to assuage all you naysayers out there, behold! Here’s a link to the manufacturer.

June Police Report

From the Sewanee Messenger:

“Chief Jim Parrott reports that the department patrolled 4,937 miles; investigated one automobile accident; no arrests were made; one Speeding Citation and four warnings were issued; and seven dogs were picked up for the pound.”

That’s for the entire month of June.

What did you do today?

Sewanee Stream
Today we took some time and hiked a tiny bit of the perimeter trail next to Morgan’s Steep at Sewanee. This is pic from a random stream that we crossed…whatever this place lacks in consumer comforts it more than makes up for in sheer beauty.

The area around the Domain is just amazing…cliffs and streams and waterfalls and amazing flora and fauna. Yesterday we ate dinner with my sister and brother-in-law on our screen porch while we watched two deer graze along the edge of the woods of our backyard.
