Please prepare a 60-90 second song in the style of the show, and bring a track with you on your phone...a speaker will be provided. You may also be asked to sing with others that are auditioning to check harmonies, especially if you are interested in Ronnette, Crystal, or Chiffon.
You will be asked to read sides, provided below for each character. You may be asked to read with the production team, and will also be teamed with others who are auditioning.
There will not be a dedicated dance call. This show will need some minor choreography, especially for Ronnette, Crystal, and Chiffon, but will not call for traditional musical theater style dance. Strong movers are appreciated, especially for Seymour and the Audrey II Puppeteer.
Seymour Krelborn - Side 1-Side 2
He is a somewhat insecure, a little naïve, somewhat put‐upon orphan florist’s clerk, and plant aficionado. He’s sweet and well‐meaning, somewhat shy, awkward; lacking in social skills. He has a whole lot of insecurity going on, but as the show progresses, so does his confidence.
Audrey - Side 1 Side 2
The secret love of Seymour’s life. She is honest and attractive, has very low self‐esteem, dresses a little trashy, attracts the wrong guys, has big dreams, and is self‐sacrificing. Another clerk in Mushnik’s flower shop. Lacking in education and self‐esteem, she suffers from feelings of hopelessness at her situation in life (in a cheery sort of way), including her abusive relationship with her boyfriend, Orin Scrivello.
Crystal, Ronette and Chiffon - Side 1 - Side 2
Three female street urchins, who function both as participants in the action and as a Greek Chorus outside it. They’re young, wise-cracking, street smart, hip, smart, and soulful and the only characters who know what’s going on. Together, they are a top notch 50s/60s girl group (Chiffons, Ronnettes, Dixie Cups, Supremes). They are our story tellers and very much drive the action.
Mr. Mushnik - Sides
Owner of the flower shop; the boss. A failure of a lower East Side florist. Grouchy. Opportunistic but with some ethics. His accent, if he has one, is middle class New York Jewish.
Orin Scrivello, DDS - Side 1 - Side 2
A handsome, sadistic, laughing gas inhaling, dentist with a motorcycle, and black leather jacket. Think of Orin as an egotistical pretty‐boy who thinks he's Fonzie, Elvis, and James Dean all rolled into one. Actor cast in this role will also play a variety of other roles such as Wino #2, Customer, Mr Berstein, Mrs Luce, Skip Snip, and Patrick Martin.
Audrey II aka Twoey - Side 1 - Side 2
This role is NOT gender specific. The off-stage voice of our carnivorous plant. Larger than life, their voice carries wondrous weight and presence. Foul-mouthed. Smooth, Sweet-talking and street smart. They ooze the rhythm and blues. The Plant is very persuasive and excels at getting what it wants. Strong character actor and singer. Actor cast in this role will perform in voice only.
Audrey II Puppeteer - The on-stage performer inside the various Audrey II puppets, ranging from hand-puppet and small plant pod in Act One, to the full-sized man-eater of Act Two. Role will require coordination and strong understanding of character. Actor in this role will work closely with Audrey II's voice actor throughout rehearsals.
