On this blog, I don’t often wax poetic about my family. On Twitter and over on Brand New World, sure, but I usually keep this area for stuff about some aspect of my life outside of my wonderful wife and amazing daughter…professional, if you will. But today, Eliza turns two, and I thought I should pause for just a moment and just make sure that everyone knows:

She is fucking awesome.

I hope that someday she’ll be able to look at the things that I’ve written and the photos I’ve taken and that she can feel even some of the love that I have for her. She’s my monkey, that daughter of mine, and she gets more amazing every day.

Daddy loves you, Eliza Rhea.

I’m about 10 days from heading back to the library after taking a three week break in order to get settled with Eliza. We’re 11 days into Eliza’s life, and I can’t imagine going away for 10 hours a day from her. Everyone told me this would happen, and of course I knew it would, but the reality of the situation is beginning to surface.

We’ll see how the next 10 days go, but I’m betting that the first bit back into libraryland is going to be disorienting. Those of you with kids, how do you manage?

Library Building update

Besides being way too long since my last post (it is getting busy around here, and Eliza hasn’t even shown up), it’s about time for an update on the Library Building Project.

If you take a look at the wiki, we’ve basically filled it with information about all our existing square footage, projected square footage, and basic collection decisions. At the last building committee meeting, we received the go ahead from the committee to look at compact shelving for our entire collection. This was a huge concern, we weren’t sure that everyone would see the benefits…the numbers are there in the wiki, but it saves us nearly 20,000 sq ft that could be used for patron-centered services.

I’m particularly happy with the feedback form. People are starting to use it to tell us what they want out of the new space, and we’re marching ever toward a shiny new patron centered library.

My favorite use of quotation marks

Here’s a great example of my very favorite misuse of quotation marks: the use of quotation marks to indicate emphasis, where it should probably be underlined or bolded. This is a card we recieved at our latest baby shower.

So it’s not for Betsy; it’s for someone like Betsy, or perhaps someone pretending to be Betsy?

We’ve put off an official blog announcement until now, but it just can’t wait any longer:

It’s a girl!!!

This is an older scan, but I haven’t had time to put up the newest ones, so…this will do as a placeholder. Betsy and I are expecting a little girl, due Dec. 19th. We are both so completely thrilled, and excited, and scared. But mostly thrilled and excited.

Here’s the rules: No Pink. No Frilly dresses. No dating until she’s 25. Got it?
